Her First Foal β And the Sweetest Reaction Ever
Delilah kept us right on schedule β foaling exactly 36 hours after our previous baby β but as a maiden mare (a first-time mom), we knew this one might come with a few question marks.
For those who donβt know, a maiden mare is experiencing everything for the very first time β the sensations, the instincts, the responsibility of a newborn foal. Some take to it immediatelyβ¦ and others, like Delilah, need a moment to figure it all out.
When she went into labor, it was clear she wasnβt quite sure what was happening. She kept trying to position herself right up against the wall, looking for comfort in all the wrong places as her body did what it naturally needed to do.
After delivering her foal, she was more than ready to leave the stall and put some distance between herself and whatever just happened. But then came the moment we were waiting for β we gently encouraged her to really see her baby.
And just like that⦠everything changed.
The confusion melted away, and in its place was curiosity, then connection, and finally that unmistakable bond. Within moments, Delilah was completely in love. π
Itβs always a bit of a journey with maiden mares, but watching that first spark turn into a lifelong bond never gets old.
