Craft Beer Tour of Braga, Portugal - March 2026: https://youtu.be/Mt-84E3KKZE . Hey folks! In this film I'll be taking a craft beer tour around the city of Braga in Portugal. Braga is a historic city in northern Portugal, located approximately 55 kilometres northeast of Porto. It is one of the country’s oldest cities, with origins dating back to Roman times when it was known as Bracara Augusta. Today, Braga is an important regional centre known for its religious heritage, historic architecture and growing university population. For visitors to Braga, the city centre is compact and walkable, with a mix of medieval streets, baroque buildings and modern infrastructure. One of the main landmarks is the Braga Cathedral (Sé de Braga), which dates back to the 11th century and reflects a combination of Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque architectural styles. The cathedral complex includes chapels, a treasury and cloisters, providing insight into the city’s long religious history. Another key site for visitors is Bom Jesus do Monte, located on a hillside just outside the city centre. This sanctuary is known for its long baroque staircase, which ascends in a series of terraces and fountains. The site is accessible by road, on foot, or via a historic funicular railway, which is one of the oldest water-powered funiculars still in operation. Braga has a strong association with religious events and traditions. The city is often referred to as the “Rome of Portugal” due to its large number of churches and its role in Catholic history. Holy Week (Semana Santa) is one of the most significant annual events, featuring processions and ceremonies that attract visitors from across Portugal and beyond. The city is also home to the University of Minho, which contributes to a younger population and a more contemporary cultural scene. This mix of historic and modern influences is visible in Braga’s cafés, public spaces and cultural venues. Transport connections make Braga accessible for visitors. The city is linked to Porto by regular train services, with journey times typically around one hour. Braga railway station is located close to the city centre, and local buses provide connections within the city and surrounding areas. Road access via the A3 motorway also connects Braga to other northern Portuguese cities. For visitors researching Braga, key features include its Roman origins, religious architecture, hillside sanctuaries and accessible transport links. The city offers a combination of historic sites and everyday urban life, making it a practical destination for exploring northern Portugal. In this film i'll be searching out the craft beer venues that I can find in Braga, I begin at Cervejaria F Beer House, which despite Google Maps identifying it as a craft beer venue, it isn't. I follow this with Dona Beer...which is closed. Third time however is a charm and visit a lovely little bar called Alma Do Raio, I follow this with Mal Amado and finally end up at Letraria - the Letra Brewery tap - and this place is absolutely superb. I sample a range of excellent craft beers, the majority of which are Portugese and quite a few of which are local to Braga. Despite my couple of false starts the three venues that I did find open that sold craft beer were excellent and on those alone I would say that Braga is worth a visit if you fancy trying some craft beers alongside looking at the lovely old city, Cathedral and other religious sites mentioned above.
