When Gentle Jesus Gets Angry, The Mystery of the Cursed Tree, July 23 Happy Thursday/Greetings everyone! In this powerful and challenging continuation of our devotional series for July 23, titled "His Boldness," we look into a moment where Jesus’ gentle demeanor seemingly shifts into something unexpected and intense. We begin with a sweet childhood memory from Buenos Aires, watching a massive backyard fig tree for its early, sugary fruits known as brebas. This stands in sharp contrast to the bizarre event in Mark 11. While traveling from Bethany, a hungry Jesus approaches a leafy fig tree. Even though it wasn't the season for figs, the abundance of leaves gave it the outward appearance of having early fruit. Finding nothing but leaves, Jesus speaks a disturbing curse over it: "May no one ever eat fruit from you again." Was Jesus just irrationally angry? Not at all. He was enacting a living parable to expose the fruitlessness and hypocrisy of the religious system. Just as the prophets Hosea and Jeremiah used the fig tree to symbolize Israel, Jesus used this withered tree to mirror the temple—an exclusive, prideful institution that looked alive on the outside but was spiritually dead within.
