Soon after a Japanese raccoon dog (Nyctereutes viverrinus, family Canidae) peeked into a deserted den of Japanese badger (Meles anakuma, family Mustelidae) in the second-growth forest, a swarm of tiny bugs came out of the burrow in panic. They were likely to be nymphs of Japanese camel crickets (Diestrammena japanica, family Rhaphidophoridae). But the Japanese raccoon dog went on, apparently without noticing the prey in the darkness. The mass exodus of the disturbed cave crickets was replayed at 5x time-lapse with 150% digital zoom-in (0:20-). Captured with my new trailcam before dawn (around 4:55 AM) of late-October 2024 in Japan. It was rainy and 9 degrees Celsius. The sunrise time was 5:59 AM.
