The Golden Sahara II is a legendary custom car built in the 1950s by Jim Street and George Barris. Using a wrecked 1953 Lincoln Capri as its foundation, the vehicle became an icon of futuristic design and atomic-age optimism. Its most famous feature is the set of translucent, glowing tires created by Goodyear. These were made from a synthetic rubber called Neothane and illuminated from the inside with internal lightbulbs. The vehicle showcased technology far ahead of its era, including a glass bubble top, a joystick instead of a steering wheel, and early autonomous capabilities like remote control operation and collision-avoidance sensors. The interior was equally opulent, containing a television, a cocktail bar, a gold-plated telephone, and white mink carpeting. The paint was also unique, utilizing pulverized fish scales to create a pearlescent finish.
