An air suspension provides plenty of ground clearance when needed, and the standard four-wheel-drive system has terrain modes tuned for multiple surfaces. But even when you're meandering along with the lesser traffic, the Range Rover delights with a supremely plush cabin, a ride that glides over bumps, and a commanding view of the road. There's a wide range of available powertrains, including a plug-in hybrid option with some limited electric driving range. Off-road or on, a Range is a top-shelf pour. Expert Tip: Due to its combination of off-road capability and high-end interior, the Range Rover has few rivals other than the Mercedes-Benz G-class. The Range Rover gets the edge over the Benz by offering more interior space and an available third row of seats. Engine, Transmission, and Performance Engines: 395-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six, 523-hp twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8, turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six and one electric motor (542-hp combined), 606-hp twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 Transmission: 8-speed automatic Drivetrain: four-wheel drive The Range Rover is available with a quartet of powertrains, starting with a turbocharged inline-six with a 48-volt hybrid system dubbed P400 that develops 395 horsepower. During our initial test drive, it proved to be silky smooth and provided adequate pep to tug the large Range Rover around. A 523-hp twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 engine—Land Rover calls it P530—is even swifter and cranks up the Range Rover's towing capacity to 8200 pounds. A 542-hp plug-in-hybrid option—called P550e—is also available but only on the short-wheelbase models, and the range-topping SV comes with a 606-hp V-8 called P615. The Range Rover's ride is suitably plush, and with its adjustable air suspension set to Comfort mode, it floats down the road. Turning the dial to Dynamic mode firms things up some, but the big Rover still aims for a comfort-first mission. And of course, serious off-road chops are standard.
