Why do less experienced enduro riders often over-estimate their abilities? It's the dreaded Dunning Kruger effect! It doesn't always happen of course. But you'll see a lot of it on the trails. And we say this in all humility with our very average ride skills. Over the years we have crashed enough to know we have so much to learn still lol. Have you ever met a rider who boasted about their riding ability? And then you actually see them riding and they hardly know anything? On the flipside, have you met a rider who said they still had a lot to learn but in reality they were incredibly fast and skilled? We discussed this a few years ago in a video about humble versus arrogant riders. And viewers told me it was the Dunning-Kruger effect. Inexperienced people over-estimate their ability. It's summed up in the expression 'Why do dumb people think they are so smart?' Need hard enduro training? Work through our video lists. Hard enduro techniques are covered in our training vids. The experienced people? They are usually very aware of how long it took them to get to where they are. They know they have a long way to go and even under-estimate their abilities as a result. What does this mean for enduro riders? It goes something like this. Our very first dirt ride? We know we suck. But the problem starts when we know how to use a clutch, go through the gears, and how to get around a corner. Most of us automatically think we are going great! Then the crash. Or a series close calls. Reality hits hard. We know we have so much to learn. Hopefully, this is when we start to seriously learn how to ride. Perhaps we get some rider training. Or we watch very dodgy training vids on Youtube. We ask our riding buddies for advice. Hopefully, we survive. We slowly acquire skills. And when things really go wrong, our ability to anticipate problems, handle loss of traction, and brake or corner hard, might keep us out of trouble. Of course it's not always like this. Occasionally there are the experienced riders who crash all the time but won't admit it's their fault. It was the suspension. Their tyres. And their ability to learn more skills will be restricted by their lack of self-awareness. But usually experienced riders know there is still so much to learn. Remember the Greek philosopher, Socrates? Not many realise he was one of the first motorbike riders. His approach to riding? The only true wisdom is in knowing how little you know. Into enduro and dirt bikes? Check out our dirt bike videos. Extreme enduro training vids are our focus. This is a great approach to riding, whether you are a beginner or experienced. There is almost always more to learn! It's better to underestimate your abilities and live longer. And finally, good riders know the boundaries of their comfort zone. Okay, chaps! Our dirt riding tips are great for developing your hard enduro skills. A splendid ride ahead of us. Let's start off nice and safe as we want to last the distance. But we are here to have fun so let's ramp up the speed. Take some risks. Obviously the thrill-seekers will want to ride outside the comfort zone but please don't stay out there too long. There's a good chap! We want you to go home alive if possible. What about you? Did you overestimate your abilities at first? If you are enduro riding get into our enduro training vids. If you want extreme enduro training see our playlists of enduro skills to learn. Try our training vids for working on your extreme enduro techniques. If you live in a non-English speaking country it seems Youtube automatically selects the dubbed language. One viewer said he hates this but has to manually select 'English' every time.
