In this video, we break down three of the most famous the one-eyed, backwards-footed Mapinguari, Yakumama, the giant serpent goddess of the rivers and the Capelobo, a brain-sucking monster born from the elderly. We trace each one back to real (and extinct) animals that may have inspired them, from giant ground sloths and ancient anacondas to giant anteaters and tapirs, backed by fossil and archaeological evidence of ancient human-wildlife encounters.
