The Isle of Skye, the largest of Scotland’s Inner Hebrides, is famous for its dramatic, otherworldly landscapes, deep Viking and Clan history, and misty mountains. Accessible from mainland Scotland via the Skye Bridge at Kyle of Lochalsh, it is a rugged paradise of jagged peaks, castles, and hidden lochs. Portree: The vibrant, colorful capital of the island. It features a bustling harbor filled with fishing boats, excellent seafood restaurants, and local shops. Getting There: The island is a 5-hour drive from the Scottish central belt. You can drive across the free Skye Bridge, or take a vehicle ferry (e.g., from Mallaig to Armadale). Getting Around: Driving is the best way to explore, but be prepared for narrow, single-track roads with passing places. Eilean Donan Castle is one of the most famous and highly photographed 13th-century castles in the world ['0.5.9']. It sits on a tiny tidal island in the western Highlands of Scotland, positioned exactly where three great sea lochs meet: Loch Duich, Loch Long, and Loch Alsh. Connected to the mainland by a scenic stone footbridge, the castle stands near the village of Dornie on the primary route to the Isle of Skye. Origins: Named after the 6th-century Irish Saint Bishop Donan, who established a small Christian community on the island. Fortification: The first fortified castle was erected in the mid-13th century under King Alexander II to protect the lands of Kintail from Viking raids. Clan Stronghold: It served for centuries as a major stronghold for Clan Mackenzie and their loyal allies, Clan MacRae. Destruction (1719): During the Jacobite uprisings, the castle was garrisoned by Spanish soldiers fighting against the British crown. In response, Royal Navy warships bombarded the structure for three days before British forces captured it and blew it up with gunpowder. The 20th-Century Rebirth: After lying in total ruins for nearly 200 years, the island was purchased by Lieutenant Colonel John MacRae-Gilstrap in 1911.
