2026 Toyota HiLux BEV | OFF-ROAD Demonstration

Toyota Australia has launched its first ever HiLux BEV that has been developed to deliver all the performance on and off the road with the benefits of a zero-CO₂ tailpipe emissions powertrain. Available exclusively as an AWD double-cab pick-up or double-cab chassis in SR and SR5 grades, the new HiLux BEV has been designed primarily with mining, business and government fleet customers in mind who need HiLux performance but are looking for a battery-electric vehicle. Maximum outputs for the front motor are 82.2kW of power and 205.5Nm of torque while the rear motor offers 129.3kW and 268Nm. Maximum total combined power output is 144kW. Driving range for the pick-up grades is 315km on the combined NEDC cycle, while the SR cab-chassis is rated at 245km3. One of the requirements for the new HiLux BEV was that it offered off-road capability. This has been achieved through the fitment of a clever full-time AWD system with, in a first for a Toyota BEV, a six-mode multi-terrain select system. The AWD system operates seamlessly and automatically distributing torque where and when it is needed within a ratio of between 100:0 and 0:100 front to rear. Torque distribution is controlled by an array of sensors to ensure strong acceleration, high traction on slippery surfaces and excellent handling and stability. The MTS system uses electronic braking and drive force control to provide the optimum traction in a variety of different terrain with Auto, Dirt, Sand, Mud, Mogul and Snow modes. To complement the BEV powertrain, the HiLux BEV gains the same front suspension improvements and comfort tune that were made to the new HiLux launched in late 2025 including a thicker 34mm stabiliser bar, stiffer spring rates, new bushings and revised damper rates. At the rear, the HiLux BEV features a De Dion-type leaf sprung suspension with the transaxle mounted on the chassis frame to reduce unsprung weight and enable the vehicle to maintain its rigid axle for optimum off-road performance and ground clearance. The rigid axle beam uses lightweight high-strength pipe materials with forged carriers at both ends designed to protect the drive shafts. The electrically-assisted power steering delivers direct and responsive feel and feedback and the large brakes, 338mm ventilated discs on the front and 335mm discs on the rear, with regenerative capability provide effective stopping power. HiLux BEV pickup offers a payload of up to 725kg (depending on the grade) with 855kg for the SR cab-chassis4. All models feature a 2000kg braked towing capacity. Source : Toyota
