Perspective: Semicon 2.0 | 16 July, 2026

India's semiconductor ambitions have entered a new phase. The Union Cabinet has approved Semicon 2.0, with a budget outlay of ₹1.27 lakh crore – signalling that India's chip journey is no longer just about attracting investments, but about building a complete semiconductor ecosystem. Over the last few years, the foundations have been laid. Under Semicon 1.0, India approved 12 manufacturing units with investments exceeding ₹1.64 lakh crore, chip design startups have begun developing indigenous products, and a growing talent pool is being trained in advanced chip design. Now, Semicon 2.0 seeks to build on that momentum with a comprehensive strategy spanning chip design, semiconductor materials and manufacturing equipment, fabrication plants, advanced packaging, research and development, and talent creation. The objective is clear - to position India as a trusted global hub for semiconductor innovation and manufacturing, strengthen supply chain resilience, reduce import dependence in a strategically critical sector, and power the next generation of technologies, from artificial intelligence and telecommunications to electric mobility, defence and space. But what will it take to translate this vision into reality? How significant is Semicon 2.0 in the global semiconductor landscape?
