They weren't abandoned and he was essentially kidnapping them. After bringing them home they wouldn't stop screaming so he had to put them in a room to block out the noise. When he opened the front door, he was surprised to find a cat there. The mother cat had come looking for her kittens. She had tracked them down by scent and she was demanding the man return her kittens. He was so scared he fell and she was relentless. "Where are my kids?" she yelled. So he finally gave up and led her to the door where her kittens were. They recognized each other right away and the man fed them. After feeding them, mother cat realized they have it really good here and decided to stuck around. So now the man has a house for them in his front yard and they come and go as they please. He feed them regularly and the mother seemed to have forgiven the man for the accidental kidnapping.
