Description
Yesterday, @madisoncountysirens4295 and I made it to Memphis for their weekly siren test, and our first Memphis test of the year. This wound-up being "third-time's the charm" for me, as they didn't test the one day with favorable weather in January due to still dealing with the aftermath of the major winter storm a few days prior, despite me making it all the way out to the Memphis area after trudging through said snow and ice across Mississippi and Tennessee, while the one day they tested in February I wound-up coming-down sick and sadly couldn't make it as a result.
Either way, Harris and I decided to set-up at this Thunderbolt 1000T on top of the Freedom Preparatory Academy Flagship Middle School since it was spring break (and we figured we wouldn't potentially be kicked-out before the test as a result), as it hadn't been recorded yet. I found a good angle where I could try to use my car to help shield my camera from the wind here as well, and I must say I absolutely love how this shot came-out as a result, though thankfully it seems no big gusts blew through during the test. Definitely one of my favorite shots of a Memphis 'bolt I've gotten so far.
Right at 3:30 this siren wound on up and did the standard minute-and-then-some of alert Memphis does these days. Sounds like its brushes or collector rings could use some attention as I noticed the pitch fluctuated slightly during the test, but it certainly doesn't sound as bad as some other sick 'bolts I've filmed, including here in Memphis. Despite those minor pitch issues, this one definitely sounded really good and loud, so I'm definitely glad we got to record it! And now there are only 5 remaining unfilmed/unrecorded Thunderbolt sirens across Memphis...
Throughout the test and after the siren shuts-off, you can hear a nearby T-128 doing its test, with this one I believe being to our southwest. It seems it stopped facing right towards where Harris and I were set-up, with how loud its wind-down was. I think you might also be able to hear a nearby coded P-15 finishing-up its test too, once this Thunderbolt shuts-off, but I can't say for certain.
Memphis, TN's sirens are tested every Wednesday at 3:30 PM, *very strictly* weather permitting.
