Description
A male of Japanese long-horned bee (Eucera nipponensis, family Apidae) visiting pink blossoms of “azuma-syakunage” (Rhododendron degronianum, family Ericaceae) in the backyard to feed on nectar. He had a pair of long antennae, which was a male-specific feature. He groomed himself to dust off pollen as he sipped the floral nectar with his proboscis. The moment of takeoff was replayed at 5x slow-motion (0:40-). I was lucky enough to clearly see the characteristic wing veins (green arrow at 0:43) to identify him correctly among relatives species. Captured in the sunny early-afternoon (around 12:40 PM) of late-April 2026 in Japan.
