Thai men across the country faced a high-stakes military conscription lottery this April, as tensions linger along Thailand’s disputed border with Cambodia following deadly clashes last year. At a temple near Bangkok, men aged 18 to 29 drew cards that determined their fate, with black granting exemption and red requiring enlistment. Conscripts serve up to two years, while volunteers serve shorter terms and receive a monthly salary along with basic provisions.
