This is Sancerre. In 1573, thousands of people retreated within its walls during one of the bloodiest periods in the country’s history. At first, the residents believed the city’s fortifications would protect them from the army gathering outside. That was not the true danger, though. Over the months that followed, the events that would go on to occur inside would be so horrifying that the survivors would later struggle to even describe what they had endured.
