Description
Time-lapse images of a communal latrine of Japanese raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes viverrinus, family Canidae) in the windbreak forest of Japanese red-cedar (Cryptomeria japonica, family Cupressaceae). The carpet of snow covering the forest floor gradually melted away in early spring.
Other than regular guests of Japanese raccoon dogs defecating there, Oriental turtle doves (aka Eastern turtle dove or rufous turtle dove; Streptopelia orientalis, family Columbidae) were caught on trailcam foraging for food on the snowy forest floor in daytime. And a nocturnal field mouse [either Large Japanese field mouse (Apodemus speciosus, family Muridae) or Small Japanese field mouse (Apodemus argenteus, family Muridae)] were occasionally scurrying around the forest floor in search of food.
These are not sensor-activated shots by a trailcam but 1-minute interval shots day and night for 10 days of early and mid-March 2025 in Japan.
