The Ezhara Ponnana procession, held annually at the Ettumanoor Sree Mahadeva Temple in Kottayam, is one of the most mesmerizing spectacles of Kerala's temple festivals. Ezhara Ponnana, meaning "seven-and-a-half golden elephants," refers to a group of seven two-foot-tall elephants and one smaller elephant standing just one foot tall, together known as the 'seven-and-a-half elephants.'
This grand procession is part of the temple’s ten-day annual festival, which begins in Kumbham (February/March). The festival features the majestic Aaraattu procession, elaborate elephant pageantry, and vibrant cultural performances. A major highlight is the Ezhara Ponnana Darshanam, which occurs at midnight on the eighth day. This ceremonial sighting of the golden elephants, accompanied by caparisoned elephants and the traditional temple orchestra, is considered a symbol of good fortune. It offers a rare and unforgettable experience, showcasing Kerala’s deep religious and cultural heritage.
