Today, 37 years ago, on June 4, 19 89, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) ordered the People's Liberation Army to open fire on its own citizens in and around Beijing's Tiananmen Square. What began as student-led calls for reform, anti-corruption, and freedom turned into one of the most brutal suppressions in modern history. Today, the CCP still censors any discussion of the events. We take a look at the commemorations, including an exclusive, newly released archive of photographs shedding light on a chapter of history the CCP has long sought to erase.
