Description
After almost a month exploring British Columbia, we finally reached Churchill, Manitoba, the reason we came to Canada in the first place. This was where we hoped to see two incredible species: polar bears and beluga whales.
We joined a small group bound for Fireweed Island, about two hours north of Churchill by boat. The day couldn’t have been calmer—bright blue skies, glassy water, and barely a ripple. Along the way, we passed a few bears on shore, but when we arrived, the real show began. The rocky beach was lined with polar bears, some swimming, others walking the shoreline, and a mother with her cub in the distance.
We went ashore for two unforgettable hours, keeping a respectful distance from the world’s largest carnivore. Fireweed Island looked almost unreal, like something straight out of a painting or made with AI.
On the return trip, the day took another turn. Suddenly, we were surrounded by hundreds of beluga whales in Hudson Bay, glowing white adults and soft grey calves gliding all around the boat. They followed our wake, curious and playful, filling the water with soft clicks and whistles.
We drifted among them for nearly 90 minutes, speechless. And the wildest part? This wasn’t even the best beluga encounter of the trip.
