The DESPICABLE END of Theseus

After years imprisoned in the Underworld, Theseus returns aged to find Athens transformed: his throne taken, his reforms destroyed, and his mother taken as a slave. Seen as an irresponsible hero, he loses the people's support and goes into exile. Seeking shelter in Skyros, he is betrayed by King Lycomedes and pushed off a cliff, meeting an undignified end to a legendary life. For centuries, his glory was tarnished, until his spirit reportedly appeared at Marathon to defend Athens. His remains were finally honored, and Theseus became the eternal hero of the people.
