Description
Pope Leo once saved the city of Rome from destruction.
Not this Pope Leo… this one.
In the late 5th century, the Western Roman Empire was falling apart.
Attila the Hun had been tearing through European cities and was headed toward Rome.
Instead of sending an army, the Roman emperor sent the Pope to defend Rome from one of history's deadliest warriors, who was nicknamed “The Scourge of God”
The old pope had no physical defense, so he prayed for spiritual protection.
Pope Leo met the great conqueror outside the city and appealed to him to spare Rome, reportedly saying “The people have felt thy scourge; now as suppliants they would feel thy mercy.”
Attila pondered the request in silence, gazing upon the Pope’s robes.
Legend has it, Attila looked up and saw a vision of Saints Peter and Paul similarly dressed wielding swords aimed at him.
The Apostles said, “Unless thou obey this priest, thou and thine shall perish”.
Whatever the case may be, after meeting with the Pope, Attila the Hun turned back and spared Rome of the fate that had befallen countless cities before it.
Today, we not only call Leo a saint, but Saint Leo the GREAT, redefining greatness not in terms of temporal conquests, but by submission to the will of God, in whom all greatness is found.
Pope St. Leo the Great, pray for us.
