In 2016 there were almost 27000 swimming the Pacific. Today scientists estimate only about 13000 remain, and the small western Pacific group has just 100 to 150 whales left in total. That’s a massive decline in less than a decade. These gentle giants make one of the longest migrations on Earth traveling up to 12000 miles round trip every year from Mexico to the Arctic. They don’t eat like other whales either, they vacuum the ocean floor for crustaceans leaving long trails in the sand like underwater crop circles. But here’s the shocking part gray whales are literally shrinking. Scientists found they’re up to 13 percent shorter than they were just a few decades ago likely from food shortages and warming seas.
