The nature documentarian has spent the majority of his life getting up close and personal with some of the world’s wildest animals and landscapes. However, that unfortunately took him away from his wife Jane, and their two children, Robert and Susan. Speaking to Woman’s Day, David said, “Maybe I should have been there more for my family and my children. My children still tease me about it now. I’m sorry that I missed some parts of their lives.” In a 2017 Radio Times interview, he remarked about the difficulty of not seeing his kids grow up.
