Description
Watch three iconic Supermarine Spitfire fighters fly in tight, low-level formation, with no narration—just the awesome sound of three Rolls-Royce aero engines in unison – a Griffon and two Merlins.
The first aircraft is a sleek Spitfire Tr.9 (MH367), carrying the distinctive EN520 desert colours of No. 81 Squadron RAF, flown by New Zealand’s top-scoring ace Colin Gray during the North African campaign.
The second aircraft is the battle-hardened Spitfire Mk.IX (PV270), decked out in the familiar markings of Alan Deere, the celebrated New Zealand-born ace of the Battle of Britain. The Mk.IX, introduced in mid-1942, significantly boosted Spitfire performance with its Merlin 61 engine, helping turn the tide in the air war over Europe.
The third is a powerful Spitfire Mk.XIV (NH799), fitted with the potent Rolls-Royce Griffon engine and wearing a South East Asia Command (SEAC) colour scheme with individual letter “T.” Previously owned by Sir Tim Wallis, founder of The Alpine Fighter Collection at Wanaka in New Zealand, this is the one in which he had a serious accident in 1996, and its return to flight a testament to the restoration teams efforts.
With no commentary or voice-over, this video allows you to fully immerse yourself in the sight and sound of these historic warbirds in flight—every engine note, every wingtip whistle, every formation pass—capturing the timeless appeal of the Spitfire for enthusiasts around the globe, regardless of language.
