There aren’t many cars I’d happily leave my GT3 at home for. But after two weeks with the #RS6 Performance, I’ve discovered that this might be one of them.
It’s hard to put your finger on at first. Sure, the #Audi RS6 is already everyone’s dream daily — but the Performance feels like the RS6 experience dialled up to IMAX quality. Same film, same characters, just sharper, more vivid, and so much more alive.
It’s not the first time Audi have done an improved RS6. The first was the C5 RS6 Avant Plus - limited to 999 units, it had a 30 BHP increase in power to 480, and was the first Audi to go faster than 250km! The successor C6 Plus was even rarer at only 500 units, with no more power to the Lambo shared V10, but it was delimited - the only faster Audi was the R8! In the C7 generation, the Plus changed to Performance - along with the RS7 now too, with more power on tap.
With the C8 Performance, it’s not a limited car. In fact it’s the only one you can buy in the UK currently. But that’s ok, because it makes the normal car feel very much redundant. Why? It all comes down to modern Audi Sport learning, as deployed so effectively in the RS4/RS5 competition models, and the R8.
We start with that pure V8 set up. A dying breed in this world of silent EVs and clever hybrids, yet it’s even better here with more power, quicker gear shifts, and less sound insulation around the car to hear more of the exhaust. But the extra 30PS and 50Nm over the standard car aren’t the big story here — it’s how this car manages to be more emotional, more involving, and somehow more playful, despite much of the same basis. It’s also great to know, that the more expensive RS6 GT, is the same power as this, and genuinely doesn’t feel that far away in dynamics too.
Of course, it’s not perfect. Like all great V8s, it’s thirsty, but at least fuelling up is a rewarding experience. Worst of all, it still runs Audi’s painfully outdated MMI media system — something you’d barely tolerate in a car half this price. Bluetooth and CarPlay work when they feel like it, unless you look at it wrong; and everything just feels slow. That’s a problem when buying new, they start around £120k — but we will discuss buying and the used market too.
But in all honesty, it’s one of those rare cars that make all of that fade into the background as soon as you start it up in dynamic mode, hear that V8 roar through the reduced insulation, and feel it rip its way down the road faster than a new M5 — the logical arguments go out the window.
Is this really the dream daily we’ve all convinced ourselves it is? One good enough to forget your #supercar ?
Or is it just a last dance for an old-school V8 dinosaur before the inevitable?
Let’s find out!
