Description
In the pouring rain on 8 Mile in Detroit, I sat outside a pawn shop, blind, injured, and pretending to be in need… just to see if anyone would stop. Most people walked right past me. Some stared. Some hesitated. But almost everyone kept going. Until Denise.
Denise is a 56-year-old single mother and grandmother from Detroit, doing everything she can to take care of her family while struggling financially herself. That day, she was at the pawn shop just trying to pay a bill. She didn’t have much. But when she saw me sitting there in the rain… she didn’t think twice.
She stopped.
She talked to me.
She made sure I felt seen and heard.
She took the time to understand what I was going through… even though she was going through her own struggles. Then she did something I’ll never forget. Denise went to her car, grabbed a jacket, and gave it to me so I wouldn’t be cold.
And then… she gave me her last $2. Not because she had extra. But because she cared.
In a moment where she could’ve kept walking… she chose kindness.
After hearing her story, we knew we had to do something. So right there in the rain, we surprised her with $1,000… but that was only the beginning.
We shared Denise’s story with the world… and people everywhere came together to support her.

A few days later, we asked her to meet us back at the same pawn shop. She thought it was just to catch up. But what happened next… she never saw coming. All because she chose to help a stranger in the rain.
Denise didn’t know who I was.
She didn’t know a camera was rolling.
She just followed her heart.
This video is a reminder that kindness is still alive. That even when you have very little… you can still make a big difference.
Thank you to everyone who donated, shared, and made this possible.
Thank you to @bigsean and the @PistonsTV and thank you to the Mayor or Detroit, Mary Sheffield for all coming out to help surprise Denise with us.
