Celebrating summer solstice sunrise at Stonehenge

Thousands of people gathered at England’s ancient stone circle of Stonehenge on Sunday to celebrate the summer solstice, cheering as the sun rose over the prehistoric monument. The annual event, which marks the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, drew a crowd of around 20,000 by organizer estimates, as people stayed up through the night to witness the sunrise. "It's actually been a really beautiful solstice. We've had a peaceful celebration, and everyone's having a lovely time," said Jennifer Wexler, curator of history for English Heritage, which manages the site. As the morning light broke, attendees danced, played music, and touched the towering stones, a practice typically restricted during regular visiting hours to protect the site. The monument, located in Wiltshire in southern England, is famous for its precise alignment with the movements of the sun. During the summer solstice, the sun rises behind the Heel Stone, which stands just outside the main circle.
