Description
A nocturnal field mouse [either Large Japanese field mouse (Apodemus speciosus, family Muridae) or Small Japanese field mouse (Apodemus argenteus, family Muridae)] visiting the feeder box full of Japanese horse-chestnuts (Aesculus turbinata, family Sapindaceae) in the mountain forest. Contrary to my expectations, the wood mouse didn’t bring away the nutritious nuts to hoard them for overwintering somehow. After examining the content of the feeder box a few times, the mouse never came back. I presume that all of the Japanese horse-chestnuts collected this season could happen to be highly toxic (containing high doses of saponin). Captured with my old trailcam at night of late-October 2024 in Japan.
