The British Invasion of New York in 1776 was a critical campaign during the early stages of the American Revolutionary War. Following the colonists' Declaration of Independence in July, the British aimed to crush the rebellion by seizing New York City, a strategic port and economic hub. Under General William Howe, a massive British force—over 32,000 troops, supported by the Royal Navy's fleet—arrived in New York Harbor in late June. This armada, one of the largest ever assembled at the time, dwarfed the Continental Army led by General George Washington, which numbered around 19,000 mostly inexperienced soldiers. The invasion began with the Battle of Long Island on August 27, 1776. British forces outflanked Washington's defenses at Brooklyn Heights, inflicting heavy casualties—over 1,000 American dead or wounded compared to just 400 British losses. Washington narrowly escaped total defeat by orchestrating a daring nighttime evacuation across the East River, saving his army under the cover of fog. The British then pursued, capturing Manhattan in the Battle of Kip's Bay on September 15 and the Battle of Harlem Heights the next day, though the latter was a minor American victory that boosted morale. By November, Howe had taken Fort Washington and Fort Lee, forcing Washington to retreat across New Jersey. The British occupation of New York lasted until the war's end in 1783, serving as their main base.
