Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei has called for an immediate halt to the conflict, insisting Tehran sought diplomacy before the US launched “preemptive” strikes across the nation.
“They must stop the war. We did not start it. Our choice was diplomacy,” Baghaei said in a statement.
He warned of catastrophic consequences for the entire planet if the situation continues to escalate.
“The international community must decide to fulfil its responsibility before it is too late. The process that has begun will soon engulf Europe. The fire that the US and the Zionist regime ignited will engulf the entire world.”
National security analyst Jasmine El-Gamal, a former adviser to the US Department of Defence, has warned that the war is heading towards “uncontrolled escalation”.
Speaking to Sky News UK, Ms El-Gamal accused President Trump of being “reckless”, of “dragging the entire region along with him”, and of trying to retroactively justify his decision to start the war.
“The pathway to escalation is wide open, unfortunately,” she said.
“I think what we’ve seen over the last three days is the scene being set for uncontrolled escalation. Because we’re now getting to the point where Iran is desperately trying to maintain its survival as a regime, and you have a US President who’s desperately trying to retain his credibility, and trying to make sense of this decision he made to go to war.
At a press conference in Canberra, Foreign Minister Penny Wong has warned the conflict in the Middle East is “spreading and intensifying” as she gave an update on the federal government’s efforts to get stranded Australians home.
“What we have seen is now Iran has hit 10 countries, and we have seen an attack on the US consulate,” Ms Wong said, noting that all Australian personnel at the consulate in Dubai remain safe and accounted for.
Some 200 Australians are on their way to Sydney from Dubai aboard an Emirates flight scheduled to touch down at 10.30pm tonight, Ms Wong said – the first plane from the UAE to here since the conflict began on Saturday.
“We thank the UAE for their support,” Ms Wong said. “Obviously, we still have a lot more work to do. But it’s pleasing to see a commercial option being provided
