Description

Turbochargers versus superchargers, which one’s better? Both options are exciting, as they provide boost, or more air, for an engine, allowing that engine to make more power, but they go about it in very different ways. A turbocharger relies on exhaust gases to spin up a turbine, which drives a compressor, forcing in additional air to the engine. A supercharger is driven by the engine, commonly with a belt, and this belt spins a compressor that forces in more air, and bing bang boom, you make more power. Turbochargers tend to be more efficient, but since they’re reliant on exhaust gases, they don’t tend to be great for low RPM torque, and they suffer from turbo lag, delaying your throttle response as you wait for sufficient exhaust flow. Superchargers tend to be much more responsive, with better low end torque, but they’re not as efficient. So to summarize, turbos go bwaahhhh stututututu, while supers go wheeeororrrrrrm. There’s a ton of different types of both options; if you’re curious about them, a huge nerd has a ton of videos covering the variety out there.
