Wahine softball completes Friday doubleheader sweep in Manoa

The University of Hawaiʻi softball team opened play in the Outrigger Classic on Friday with a doubleheader sweep of Mercyhurst and Portland State at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. Behind a dominant performance in the circle from Macy Brandl in the opener and a walk-off hit from Jamie McGaughey in game two, the Rainbow Wahine improved to 6-1 at home this season and 7-9 overall. In the first game, Brandl struck out five and allowed no runs in a five-inning, mercy-rule shortened 8-0 victory over Mercyhurst. Hawaiʻi’s offense provided early support, plating multiple runs to put the Lakers away and secure the shutout. The Rainbow Wahine carried that momentum into the nightcap but were pushed to extra innings by Portland State. McGaughey went 2 for 4 with a home run and delivered the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift Hawaiʻi to a 6-5 win over the Vikings.
