Description
The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel is one of longest bridges in the world. It crosses the mouth of Chesapeake Bay between Virginia's Eastern Shore and the city of Virginia Beach. Officially 17.6 miles long (19.0 miles between toll plazas), the crossing features a high-level span over the North Channel, a 5,237 ft. long tunnel beneath Chesapeake Channel, and a 5,552 ft. long tunnel beneath Thimble Shoal Channel.
The original span opened in 1964, with the twin span trestles opening in 2000. Construction is underway on the parallel Thimble Shoal Channel Tunnel project, which is planned for completion in 2028. A similar project is planned for the Chesapeake Channel Tunnel in the future.
