Makere had been sitting with her cousins on Saturday afternoon, coffee in hand, in her quiet home in Bryndwr, Christchurch, when the chilling sound came from next door. “I thought it was just the kids playing until the scream had pain in it … it was a scream for help.” She ran outside. Next door, a young boy was cowering on the bonnet of a car, trying to stay out of reach. His father, badly injured, was stumbling towards the gate — blood streaming from his legs as the family’s pet dogs mauled him. “I just opened up my arms and I told the son to jump to me,” Makere recalls. She caught the boy and pulled him over their shared fence just as his father collapsed onto her concrete driveway.
