Description
Luxair LG4542 Take-off From Manchester Airport in a Bombardier Dash 8 Q400, Greater Manchester, England - 6 February, 2026
Luxair is the national airline of Luxembourg, officially Luxair S.A. (Société Luxembourgeoise de Navigation Aérienne), founded in 1961 with its first flight Luxembourg–Paris in 1962. It operates scheduled and seasonal services from Luxembourg Findel Airport to destinations in Europe, North Africa, the Mediterranean and the Middle East. Luxair transported over 2.6 million passengers in 2024 and serves 90+ destinations with a mixed fleet of Boeing 737s and turboprops. The airline is rated 4-star by Skytrax for service quality and is part of the Miles & More programme. It is also expanding routes for summer 2026.
The De Havilland Canada Dash 8 Q400 is a turboprop regional airliner built for short- to medium-haul flights, seating about 70–78 passengers in a typical single-class layout. It features two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW150A turboprop engines driving six-bladed propellers, giving it fast cruise speeds (~667 km/h) and fuel-efficient performance compared with many jets. The “Q” designation refers to its Noise and Vibration Suppression (NVS) system, which makes the cabin quieter than earlier Dash 8 models. Its sturdy design and ability to use shorter runways make it popular with regional airlines worldwide.
Manchester Airport is a major international airport serving the North of England. It is located about 7 miles (11 km) southwest of Manchester city centre in Ringway. The airport opened in June 1938 as Ringway Airport and expanded significantly after the Second World War. Today it is the third-busiest airport in the United Kingdom and the busiest outside London, handling more than 30 million passengers annually and offering flights to around 200 destinations worldwide.
The airport covers approximately 560 hectares and has two parallel runways, enabling it to handle a high volume of aircraft movements, including long-haul services. It currently operates three passenger terminals, although a major redevelopment programme has centred operations around an expanded Terminal 2 as part of a multi-billion-pound transformation project.
Manchester Airport is owned and operated by Manchester Airports Group (MAG). It plays a vital role in the regional economy, supporting tens of thousands of jobs directly and indirectly. The airport serves as a base for several airlines and offers a wide mix of full-service, low-cost, charter and long-haul carriers. It also handles significant cargo operations, strengthening its importance as a logistics hub for northern England.
Historically, the airport has been the site of notable events, including the 1985 British Airtours Flight 28M accident. Over time, continuous investment in infrastructure, transport links and passenger facilities has strengthened its position as one of the UK’s leading aviation gateways.
