Description

The site at Dunraven Castle was originally an Iron Age hillfort, followed by a medieval fortification built in the 12th century by Arnold le Boteler. The property passed through the Butler and Vaughan families before being sold to the wealthy Wyndham family in 1642. Thomas Wyndham rebuilt the existing manor house into a castellated hunting lodge around 1803. It was later extensively remodelled into a grand Victorian Gothic mansion in the mid-to-late 19th century by his descendants, the Earls of Dunraven. During both World War I and World War II, the mansion was used as a military convalescent hospital. After the wars, it served briefly as a guest house but became too expensive to maintain. Following a dispute over potential development with the local authority, the contents were auctioned off, and the house was demolished in 1963. Today, only the foundations, a walled garden, and an ice tower remain, and the site is part of the Glamorgan Heritage Coast, a popular visitor area.
