We follow a heritage diesel excursion train to an American car themed street-festival in Inglewood, New Zealand.
The annual Taranaki Americarna event started in 2007 and celebrates American car culture in NZ. The 2025 event ran from Wednesday 19th to Saturday 22nd of February. It is hugely popular with both enthusiasts and members of the public alike. The 2025 event attracted 600 cars, representing a wide array of vehicles from vintage & classic cars to modern American muscle. Using the city of New Plymouth as a hub, the event is shared with selected host townships in the surounding Taranaki region.
This video looks at day two of Americarna where the convoy has arrived at Inglewood from Waitara late afternoon. There are food stalls at the ready along the sides of the streets and in the old railfreight yard. Hamilton based covers band 'The Monroes' are on stage. The townspeople come out in large numbers to watch the convoy arrive.
Steam Incorporated Paekākāriki operated a four-day Americarna Rail Experience. This train featured heritage diesel-electric locomotives DC4818 (Glenbrook Vintage Railway) & DA1431(Steam Inc). On the way up the Marton - New Plymouth Line, the excursion train crosses Train 545 at Patea (hauled by DL's 9163 & 9256). After dropping its passengers off at Inglewood, the excursion goes further up the line to Lepperton, where the locomotives are placed on each end of the train. Train 521 (hauled by DL's 9550 & 9665) heads south in the meantime.
As dusk approaches, the convoy is farewelled as it heads back to New Plymouth
