This is exactly the kind of crisis that left Mama Rawa and her baby in desperate danger after the 2019 fires. They had fled from the flames with a large male orangutan and taken refuge near a local home. But there was not enough food or shelter to survive. When the joint rescue team from our partners, YIARI, and BKSDA West Kalimantan arrived, they found the orangutans surviving on dry tree bark. Mama Rawa was malnourished, extremely thin and appeared to have been starving for months. The team had no choice but to rescue her and her baby first, while continuing to monitor the stronger male. This is what fires do. They destroy food, shelter and safe forest, leaving orangutans with nowhere to go. Now fires are threatening Borneo again.
