AUSTIN, Texas (KWTX) - Three people are dead and 16 others injured after a gunman opened fire on a crowd outside a popular downtown bar early Sunday, March 1, before being shot and killed by Austin police, authorities said. Police on March 5 released video of the suspect and several video clips recorded by police body cameras. The shooting began around 1:58 a.m. outside Buford’s, a bar at 700 West 6th Street. According to the Austin Police Department (APD), multiple 9-1-1 callers reported that someone was firing into a crowd gathered outside the business. APD officers and Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services arrived within 57 seconds, police said. First responders found multiple victims suffering from gunshot wounds and immediately began providing medical aid. Austin Fire Department personnel also assisted at the scene. Investigators say the violence started when a black Cadillac SUV traveling south on Rio Grande Street pulled alongside Buford’s. The driver allegedly began shooting a pistol into the crowd in front of the bar, striking several people. The vehicle then continued westbound on West 6th Street and stopped near West 6th and Wood streets. Police say the driver then got out of the SUV armed with a rifle and shot a pedestrian while moving back toward the bar area. As more officers arrived, they were directed toward the suspect and worked simultaneously to move bystanders to safety and establish a secure perimeter around the scene. At about 2:03 a.m., three officers located the suspect near the intersection of West 6th Street and West Avenue and saw him carrying a rifle, APD said. The suspect fired in the direction of the officers, who then shot back, striking him multiple times. Officers approached, took the suspect into custody and called for medical assistance, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Police identified the suspect as 53-year-old Ndiaga Diagne. In the hours following the shooting, investigators learned of additional victims connected to the incident. APD now says a total of 19 people, including the suspect, were injured. Three people, including Diagne, died at the scene. The two other victims pronounced dead outside the bar were identified as 21-year-old Savitha Shan and 19-year-old Ryder Harrington. Sixteen people with gunshot wounds were taken to local hospitals. One of those victims, 30-year-old Jorge Pederson, died at the hospital at 2:50 p.m. on Monday, March 2. As of the latest update from APD, two victims remain hospitalized, including one in critical condition. The confrontation between officers and the suspect was captured on body-worn cameras, city HALO surveillance cameras and witness cellphone video, police said. Video from a parked vehicle also recorded some of the events leading up to the officer-involved shooting. APD noted that while the footage does not capture everything officers and witnesses saw or experienced, it provides important evidence to help investigators piece together what happened.
