Description
Water as a Weapon: How Vulnerable Is the Middle East?
Water is often seen as a basic resource, but growing conflicts are highlighting its strategic importance. Recent threats to target desalination plants in the Middle East show how water infrastructure can become a critical vulnerability during war, temporarily disrupting supply in some areas.
Naseer Memon, Senior Advisor Water Governance at Sustainable Development Policy Institute, explains that water is becoming one of the most critical vulnerabilities in conflict situations, even more essential than oil for survival. Many countries in the Middle East rely heavily on desalination, making them highly exposed, especially where up to 90% of water needs depend on such systems.
Pakistan and India, in comparison, have relatively better groundwater availability, reducing immediate risk at that level. However, mismanagement, pollution, and neglect of natural water resources remain serious concerns. The region may not face the same level of vulnerability as the Gulf; water security is increasingly becoming a critical issue that requires urgent attention.
