Before Children Learn Independence

Before children learn independence, they must learn safety. When we carry and co-sleep with our babies, consistently respond to cries in the night, and stay close during our children's during big feelings, their nervous systems learn what calm feels like from the inside out. Independence doesn’t come from pushing children away before they’re ready. It grows from being held, soothed, and supported—again and again—until their brain and body feel safe enough to stand on their own. Closeness isn’t creating dependence.
