Description
After Franco’s victory in the Spanish Civil War, around 500,000 Republican exiles fled into France. Many were forced into internment camps, but when Nazi Germany invaded in 1940, thousands took up arms once again.
They fought in the French Foreign Legion, colonial units, the Resistance, and later the Free French Forces. Most famously, La Nueve—the 9th Company of the French 2nd Armored Division—was almost entirely made up of Spanish Republicans. In August 1944, they were the first Allied troops to enter Paris, driving half-tracks named after Spanish Civil War battles like Guadalajara and Ebro.
In our linked Short, we look at another surprising twist of history: how Britain and France nearly came to blows right after WWII.
