Description
MELROSE | Full tour of beautiful Melrose, Scotland
Come with me as we take a walking tour around Melrose, one of the prettiest towns on the Scottish borders.
Melrose is a historic market town nestled in the valley of the River Tweed within the Scottish Borders. Situated beneath the prominent triple peaks of the Eildon Hills, the town is celebrated for its scenic landscapes and well-preserved red sandstone architecture. Combining a peaceful rural charm with an active community life, it functions today as both a popular tourist destination and an attractive residential hub located roughly thirty-three miles south of Edinburgh.
The historic heart of the town is dominated by the ruins of Melrose Abbey, a Cistercian monastery founded in 1136 by King David I. Renowned for its intricate Gothic masonry and pinkish-red sandstone construction, the abbey was a powerful religious and economic center before its eventual decline following the Protestant Reformation. Today, the site draws visitors from around the world, particularly as the final resting place of the embalmed heart of the Scottish monarch Robert the Bruce.
Beyond its medieval heritage, the surrounding landscape contains deep archaeological and literary significance. Nearby Newstead marks the site of Trimontium, one of the largest Roman forts built north of Hadrian's Wall during the first century AD. The area also boasts close ties to the famous nineteenth-century novelist Sir Walter Scott, whose baronial country estate, Abbotsford House, sits just a short distance away along the banks of the River Tweed.
In addition to its deep historical roots, Melrose holds a distinct place in global sporting history as the birthplace of Rugby Sevens, invented here by local butcher Ned Haig in 1883. The town continues to host the internationally acclaimed Melrose Sevens tournament every spring at the Greenyards ground. Coupled with annual cultural events like the Borders Book Festival and a bustling town center filled with independent shops and traditional hotels, Melrose remains a vibrant anchor of contemporary Borders culture.
