Description
Here is an interesting English phrase that we use when we want to express putting more effort or showing extra motivation to help someone or do something. The phrase I'm talking about is 'go the extra mile'. This particular phrase is often used when we want to express doing much more than is actually needed. To go that extra mile means to put yourself out
more than you normally would. When we say 'put yourself out', we mean you are going to extra trouble to do something. Perhaps you have a plan, but instead you decide to help your neighbour move some furniture. You are putting yourself out
for your neighbour. You might also say that you are going the extra mile. You don't have to do that particular thing, but you decide that
it is a good thing to do. Despite the fact that it will cause you some inconvenience, in your job, you might go the extra mile to make your boss happy. You put more effort into your work
than you actually need to. Sometimes there is a reason
why a person will go the extra mile. Perhaps that person wants to appear
kind and generous. Maybe they want to make a good impression
on others. In both of those situations,
you will try to go the extra mile. We can also say that a person 'goes that extra mile'. They will do more than is necessary. You can 'go the extra mile' or 'go that extra mile'. Both forms of the phrase
mean the same thing.
Of course, going the extra mile is not always a selfish action. However, if you want to be
noticed and liked, then sometimes it is necessary to go that extra mile. A little extra effort can go a long way.
