Description
It took us three days to travel from the Khutzeymateen to Campbell River, but the trip was worth it. We came for one reason: The Eagle Show, a rare natural event that happens only a few days each year in the Discovery Islands of British Columbia.
With Adventure Quest, we set off at dawn and didn’t have to wait long, humpbacks and orcas appeared right outside the harbour, swimming just off the steep drop-offs near shore. Then came a first for us, an orca spy hop!
But the real spectacle unfolded where massive tides collide. The surging current pulls migrating hake up from the deep, creating a spontaneous all-you-can-eat buffet for hundreds of bald eagles. They dive, snatch fish, and wheel overhead in a chaotic, breathtaking feeding frenzy that lasts only until they’re full.
Filming it was equal parts thrilling and impossible, the boat spun in the current while eagles filled the sky. By the time we headed back, we’d seen even more orcas, humpbacks, seals, and one sea otter doing something truly strange.
