Over here in Australia, the Toyota Hilux is still exactly what a midsize truck should be… and honestly, it makes you wonder why we don’t get this spec back home in North America. You can option this truck with a proper diesel engine, a manual transmission, a true low-range transfer case, and even a locking rear differential. On top of that, it’ll tow just under 8,000 pounds — which is right in line with what most people actually need out of a midsize truck. It’s simple, it’s proven, and it’s built to work. No unnecessary complexity, just a solid drivetrain that’s been refined over decades. Meanwhile in North America, we’ve gone all-in on turbo gas engines, automatics, and more complicated setups. Not saying those are bad — but there’s definitely something to be said about a truck like this that just keeps it old school and gets the job done.
