Trading Standards says Meta must do more to protect people from online scams in yet another push for greater regulation of social media platforms.
An estimated 15 billion scam adverts appear on Facebook every day with Meta raking in billions of pounds a year in revenue from them. Consumer groups say criminal gangs are exploiting consumers and the government needs to do more to hold big tech companies to account.
A Government spokesperson said: "Scammers who trick people into parting with their money are committing a criminal offence and should expect to be punished. Platforms also have a responsibility to ensure their services are not used to facilitate fraud."
A Meta spokesperson told Good Morning Britain: "We fight scams on and off our platforms because they're not good for us or the people and businesses that rely on our services. We require advertisers promoting financial products in the UK to demonstrate appropriate FCA authorisation and we removed over 159 million scam ads last year alone - 92% of which we took down before anyone reported them."
Former Conservative Education Secretary Gillian Keegan and Daily Mirror Columnist Kevin Maguire join Susanna Reid and Ed Balls to discuss the day's news.
