Description

► The dad left his four-month-old with injuries similar to a ‘car crash’ victim. Tony Bartlett, 39, was found guilty of murdering his baby son, Atticus, after he was violently shaken. Bartlett, of Axminster in Devon, was convicted by jury for causing severe injuries to his baby son when he shook him at home in Chard, Somerset, on 16 July 2022. Bartlett and his former partner Evelyn Ballentyne had gone on their first night out since the birth of their son. When they arrived home, the mother went upstairs and Bartlett was left alone to feed Atticus. A court heard that by the time she returned downstairs, her son looked "lifeless". Atticus was taken to Musgrove Park Hospital before being transferred to Bristol Royal Hospital for Children, where he died just before midnight on 23 July 2022. Bartlett, formerly a postman, insisted he had not harmed his son and refused to admit he was drunk. His legal team suggested Evelyn Ballentyne could have caused the fatal injuries. She was initially arrested alongside Bartlett but was never charged and appeared as a prosecution witness during the trial. Medical experts told the court Atticus had sustained severe internal injuries to his brain and spinal cord, leaving the child with injuries “that were consistent with a car crash, or a fall from a height.” After the hearing, Detective Superintendent Lorett Spierenburg said: “This is a devastating case in which a very young baby has lost his life as the direct result of a violent and cruel act. “The loss of Atticus has had a profound effect on all those who loved him.” Bartlett is expected to be given life in prison when he is sentenced at Bristol Crown Court on 24 July. ► Have you subscribed to 5 News?: http://bit.ly/5NewsSub ► Follow 5 News on Twitter to keep up to date with the latest news - https://twitter.com/5_News Message us on Facebook to share your opinion - https://www.facebook.com/c5News See our latest pictures and videos on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/c5news/ ► About 5 News: We bring you the stories that matter to you, from around the world and across the UK. 🎥 We post daily playlists with the biggest news of the day, interviews, special reports and investigations. 📺 Catch us on TV on Channel 5 every weekday 5-6pm 📱 Get in touch with us on WhatsApp at +44 7555 500 501 🎧 Listen to "How Did We Get Here?
