Description

A troop of Japanese monkeys (aka snow monkey; Macaca fuscata fuscata, family Cercopithecidae) walking across the snow field. One of them stopped under a giant tree of Kaki Persimmon (Diospyros kaki, family Ebenaceae) to jump again and again to reach a hanging branch. (You can see only a shadow of the snow monkey jumping up and down.) After several attempts, the young monkey managed to climb up the defoliated tree. I had never seen such a unique (playful) way of tree climbing by a Japanese macaque. And then the monkey foraged for a ripe fruit remaining on the distal branches. Captured with my old trailcam in the sunny midafternoon (around 15:40 PM) of mid-January 2025 in Japan.
